Default help please!

I think i should post this on a specialist dance music forum, anyway hergoes:I have just bought 2 brand new technics 1200's and a mixer. I understand that when a record is turning and I apply pressure to it with my fingers.I should be able to stop the record dead whilst the platter continues to turn at 33/45/rpm. This is not happening. The platter stops as well. I have removed the rubber mats that came with the decks and am using slipmats.Any ideas as to what might be wrong?
