I always run my new system for at least a period of 96 hours straight before I commit it to being used at a show. This is even if it is just a minor system upgrade.
Today I just installed a new 250 GB Maxtor HDD into my DJ computer. I only use this drive for my music storage. O/S and DJ Program are on the C drive.
I also now have a Lacie 250 GB external HDD which has the exact same tracks on it as the internal drive. I use this with my laptop which I take to all my shows and acts as a backup system.
Switching to digital can have it's ups and downs. But once your system is stable, you won't ever look back.
Sorry to read about your probs Jim...but I am sure you will be happily spinnin' digitally VERY soon.

Why?

I was looking for simplicity...period.
I had used Red on a limited basis before, so I stayed simple for now.

Hey Jim
When you are ready for a better program just talk to me. The VRM Red version 7.2 build 1016 is much easier to use... not much of a learning curve to the old one you are using, just easier.

Jim,
Learning a program is like learning a foriegn language.
Simular in the raw sence of playback, but quite different with it comes to learning all there is to know about running it to it's full potential.
Having learned several over time I can say that if I could have learned just one I would have saved a lot of time and effort in organization and set up.
So for you to pick up and start learning a dinosaur of a program like 5.2 had me puzzled somewhat with all the help and advice available here.
Stable... yes, but shit you don't even have full screen with 5.2.
It's like learning a stick shift when everybody else is using an automatic with overdrive and 4 wheel.
Certainly it's your choice to make, I just didn't understand.
Glad to hear your last one went really well btw.

I still use Red 5.2
It does everything I need and nothing more, nothing less.
It also goes full screen on my TFT as I don't run any silly resolutions as it's not needed for how I work.
I could very easily do a gig with my eyes closed, and I really mean that.. I am honed to my system and know every button and every slider.
Until something comes along that can help me work more efficiently or use some kind of AI to predict the next floor filler for me then I won't be changing over anytime soon.
Basically, it loads, it plays, that's good enough for me.

Phil,
My point wasn't to say the program didn't work well or wouldn't suit Jim's needs.
You have learned 5.2 from the inside out, spent the time and energy so to speak.
But, it you were just starting out would you opt for 5.2?

Phil I believe kinda captured the way I feel...
For my foray into Digital, I am going with the KISS method

If I may jump in here....FX and VRM haven't worked on either a Toshiba or a Compaq. That is why I'm still using 5.2.
In about 6 years of PCing, the only type of "crash" has been the sound-drop issue. closed program and opened 5.2
Now don't get the impression I'm slamming the product.
I know a bunch of people that it works fine for. Only about 5% that it doesn't.
I'm gonna snoop around at the CPS Summit this fall and probably jump on the "New Toys" if they function as rumored. (saying nothing more)

Scott,
You like many including myself went BACKWARDS in technology by opening 5.2.
Yes, instinctively we all did it because that is from where we came, easy to do.
I am not discrediting 5.2.
I would have probably continued with VRM if it had come sooner, I was far too deep into VDJ to learn two at the same time, just not enough time to dedicate to it.
The CPS show will certainly be one of a kind and full of all the goodies.

Don't buy into it.
Vintage RED forever
Yes, MT is nice.
I like having the ability to play CDs thru PCDJ like in old RED. I also like the ability to BPM and GAIN scan separately.
Now if you are starting out fresh - then VRM *might* be a decent investment (once get past the software dongle).
But I like simple. Simple is good. RED 5.2 and DMC-1 w/ upgd chip for me.
