No argument from me. The only thing that scares me about a large cache file (greater than 4 MB) is the OS write-behind feature perhaps conflicting with the refresh rate of the MP3 software in an external drive configuration. It can cause a momentary stutter in the music being played. (My Firewire Maxtor 120gb 7200 has the 8mb cache and it does cause stutter maybe three times a show. Never a problem with the previous 2 & 4 mb cache drives)

Although the capacity is somewhat limited right now, check out the Western Digital Raptor series. Fast. Silly Fast. 5 year warranty. Fast. Silly Fast.

After thought: I also recently upgraded from Win98SE (the old work horse) to WinXPProSR1a and there are configurable settings for write-behind that I have not quite mastered as yet. This stuttering is more than likely my lack of OS configuration knowledge.

Haven't had a stutter since FaFaFaFa eff FX.
That is pretty odd, what kind of resources when it happens or on average?

I run a stipped out OEM XPpro, haven't made any adjustments on anything behind the scenes, love it without the clutter.

How fast is silly fast?

I would not be surprised if it's more the Alcatech BPM Studio software and the Maxtor drive. I have an 80gb Maxtor with a 4mb cache. No problems. Ah, well.

As soon as WD comes out with a high capacity Raptor, I'm all over it.

BTW, I just was notified that there is FINALLY a 100gb 2.5" 5400 rpm laptop hard drive that fits my VIAO's. That's gotta mean the 7200's are not far behind. WAHOOOOO!

Just finished a wedding at midnight. Needed come down time. Going to bed. Thanks, Rick. I feel there's a shared technical bond and I know I'm going to learn much from you.

(Good Lord, I just glanced at the outdoor thermometer...17 degrees below zero!)

Cap,
Don't be silly, you tower over a guy like me.
I know what I know because of learning the hard way, lots of mistakes and help from others.

Honestly, I have not heard of drive cache causing problems.
Does BPM direct read files or read from ram?

Does it happen on both of your machines?

What I HAVE seen is programs that overload cpu's and impare and starve it to the point of stuttering. That is why I asked you about resource load when it happens.
This will typically occur when loading the idle deck or searching or in the case of scratch plug in's usage if the machine is running out of gas.

BPM has a reputation of being very stable, so I am really curious now.

I just went through the wait period for 7200 X 300G sata drives because of video needs, I feel your pain although I still prefer an external for numberous reasons.

I prefer 3.5" Maxtor 7200 RPM HDDs with a minimum of 4MB Caching.

I prefer to have these HDDs housed in a a "hot swap" port, similar to what Rick has mentioned earlier in the thread, mounted in one of the external 5.25" bays. As Rick mentioned, these run off of internal power, usually include one or more additional fans for cooling purposes and allow easy replacement or "swapping" of drives should the need arise.

I prefer using Windows 2000 Professional SP4 for the OS (less virtual / RAM memory addressing problems than XP has).

I prefer using CDex to Rip & Encode my MP3s at 192 Kbps CBR.

I prefer to use PCDJ Red for mixing software, however I am looking at upgrading to at least Red VRM in the near future. I am also just beginning to play around with FLAC which is looking like a very promising file format... It's amazing what you find when you start writing a book! lol

Hope that answers at least some of your questions Jim... :tup

I will be using a dedicated computer with WIn 2000 for an OS...I agree thats it stability is better than XPs

I got this deal for Hard Drives...

http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/Se...2&sku=THD-200M8

Can you imagine...200 mb for $89 AFTER rebate...what a steal...

And it is down to using either Red or OTS DJ
