Unhappy

As I mentioned in the DJ Idea Sharing Forum, I got up at midnight Friday morning and was 10 minutes behind the first person in line at Best Buy to purchase cheap computers etc

One of the things I bought was a 4 MP camera for only $149.99

Many of the photographers here in Maine that are digital are using 6-8 mp cameras for which they originally paid thousands of dollars.

As this technology gets less expensive and easier for the non-professionals to use (and may makie them think they too can shoot weddings), it got me to thinking...

The computer DJing revolution continues to make things easier for many DJs and of course we have many of the pioneers that have been doing this for close to a decade...

As this techology becomes more readily available to the general public and thus starts to make the average Joe think they can mix too, does this pose a danger to the livelihoods of the professionals such as us...

Will talented DJs become irrelevant?

Just because they have the technology, doesn't mean that they'll know how to use it properly.

They'll still need to know what to play, when to play it, and how to present it.

Of course, pratice will make perfect...

<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE</div><div class='quotemain'>Will talented DJs become irrelevant?
No.

The reason an individual with talent will not become irrelevant is due to the recognition of their talent.

Individuals that acknowledge or recognize talent will seek it regardless, however, the individuals who place no value on talent will seek out services based on other criteria. You have attended my seminar on the 4-scales Jim, some customers shop based on value-of-cost and others on value-of-service – the later is more reflective of the service talent and it’s important to focus your marketing on the scale of client that will value what you have to offer..

A client that wants to have nephew or their home computer be their event entertainment was never my prospect from the beginning… If you look at the BIG picture you will realize a computer taking the majority of gigs away from us will not likely happen in our career lifetime…. Remember, the MAJORITY of the population in American does not own a personal computer yet – as techno phoebes we often forget how far ahead of the curve we actually are….

Editorial:

The evloution of technology is ineivitable. Technological development is the driving force of our economy along with the services industry explosion. To ignore or fail to fully understand and embrace these recently available tools is perhaps a slow long term form of business suicide.

In terms of DJ-world and technology, it is now possible for a person who gets laid off on a Wednesday to be a DJ by Saturday, using nothing but a credit card and an internet connection. What used to take years and money for the building of a music library can now be done overnight. Let's not forget the printer either, a well designed and clever homemade business card that says "Professional DJ".

Technology is only as good as the talent using it. Not matter what, talent rises to the top. Technology will assist the talented to get better, faster, more responsive, and remove or change the cumbersome roadblocks heretofore immovable. Technology will not make someone in DJ-world talented.

Yes, there has been an influx of laptop newbees. What's more frightening is the number of established DJs losing business because they have fallen behind the technological times. Existing established talent, fearful or ignorant of employing the latest technoloy may perhaps be more responsible for the slowly returning of the industry into a commodity priced service than are the newbees.

Learn, accept, embrace, and utilize today's technology today or face decline or eventual extinction. Someone else in your market is already beating you to it.

It's funny...

I haven't felt the effect of being behind the Digital DJ chart yet, but I am gettign tired of the occasional skip and want to stay ahead of the curve as I try to do with most things here in Maine.

I will be digital by March 1st and I am psyched!

I believe I may go with Red just for simplicity...

I'm not looking for tons of bells and whistles...I'm simply a wedding jock looking for an easy program...

Bryan,

I just downloaded the sample of otsdj. I like it. I haven't gone digital yet, I just don't trust computers fully. It took me awhile to switch from vynl to cd, that was hard enough. I do think it's in the near future and the otsdj seems simple to use.

Thanks for the tip
