Jim_Casey Alright...well we have an offical crowd (OK 5)
firstclassdj2 Yes Randy?
Jim_Casey GO ahead Randy
Randy What do you do in the time before the Bride and Groom arive?
firstclassdj2 To the reception?
Jim_Casey Great opening topic
Jim_Casey During cocktails Randy?
Randy sometimes it can be 1/2 to 1 hour
Randy too much dead time
Jim_Casey Cocktails I will migle with the crowd, find out how the wedding was, look for some possilble material for the reception
Jim_Casey Remember, people are at the cocktail hour to catch up with one another
Jim_Casey People that generally do not see each other often
firstclassdj2 We play music, allow people to mingle and find their seats etc. Prepare for the arrival of the party etc
ed same here
Randy When you say cocktail hour most people are sitting at there tables talking and looking around
Randy I do play games with the kids if thwer are any
firstclassdj2 I'm usually running around talking to the caterers and photographer etc.. Making sure everything is all set.
Randy that to
ed last min potty breaks before the big annohncments
Jim_Casey Sherry, that is why I pre-plan and coordinate with them in advance of the big day
firstclassdj2 As do I
firstclassdj2 But things change
Randy we are not game people
firstclassdj2 Nope not game epople either
firstclassdj2 our customers dont want that type of service
Jim_Casey Game only if necessay and nothing too tacky
ed i used to hand out balloons to the pups
Jim_Casey The DJ at my wedding did that as well as his unicycle
Randy we also meet with them before hand but you know, that never seems to come up
Jim_Casey Soop...any opinons?
firstclassdj2 The people who hire us, specifically want an atmosphere thats not pushy in your face, games props etc.
ed those are the clients i market to
firstclassdj2 Classy, elegant with just enough interaction to break the ice and get things going
ed less work - less stuff to carry
Soop well, i pretty muchon the level with you guys in that respect...
firstclassdj2 but not in your face lets get a YMCA costume onya
Randy very true
ed a dj here in my area has full costumes for each villiage person
firstclassdj2 WE dont do that )
Soop make sure things are going to be as smooth as possible....not really into games
ed i mean complete theater costumes
firstclassdj2 We provide a service.
Johnny_Dee Login
Jim_Casey Same here...I think only certain types of clientele want that
Randy sometimes we just feel like we should be doing something
Jim_Casey Johnny Dee...welcome!
ed i just have hats (only when demanded by client)
firstclassdj2 Our customers have come to expect a certain level of entertainment ..
Johnny_Dee Hi
firstclassdj2 They still have fun.
Soop i worked with a guy who did costumes and games al the time....i was pretty uncomfotable with it.
firstclassdj2 They just prefer not to be made walking circuses on theyre wedding day
Jim_Casey We're talking right niw about the approach that everyone takes to the cocktail hour
ed in fact, i always err on side of low key
firstclassdj2 We're low to medium
ed never a comedian
ed here is a great topic - what do we play for cocktail hr
firstclassdj2 If we get a couple who wants props, games high interaction. .We refer them to a few of our DJ friends that do that
firstclassdj2 Depends
firstclassdj2 Jazz usually
Randy we are low to medium most of the night
Randy with our actions that is
Jim_Casey I would say about medium...
firstclassdj2 Of course we dont just stand there with our arms folded and not say anthing
Johnny_Dee could be jazz, light classical, light pop...depends on the client
firstclassdj2 Theres a happy medium
Jim_Casey medium high if needed
ed since i went mp3, i'm able to bring up all the AC & NAC stuff from rpm for dinner - with some jive swing tossed in there
firstclassdj2 between cheese and fun )
Randy Jazz love sones light rock or country
Jim_Casey Most clients like the Big Band Jazzy sinatra type music
Randy songs that is
firstclassdj2 We kinda go with the flow..
firstclassdj2 If people seem to be enjoying a specific sound.. WE go with it..
ed i used to fall into the play cd then walk away trap
ed now i make sure i create a special mood
firstclassdj2 We still do everyting live
firstclassdj2 and keep shuffling
firstclassdj2 and reworking
firstclassdj2 even during dinner cocktails
ed nite beat & feel good rock from sessions makes great for mingle music
Jim_Casey I admit I have premixed CDs dependent on taste that I will play, walk away and mingle with the crowd to get reception material from the wedding
firstclassdj2 I hate doing the same old same old every single time
ed i mix enya/bert kaempfert/elton john/manhatten xfer/etc
firstclassdj2 Well, there is always 2 of us.. So Matt keeps the music constantly fresh and going and I can tend to the other details
firstclassdj2 I get very involved in the planning, organizing etc etc
Johnny_Dee we only work weddings with 2 of us
Soop luckily i have gone to the computer age so i don't have pre-done cd's....just whatever the crowd seems into
ed same w/ me
Jim_Casey Wow...I have never had a two DJ show...not sure I could take it...I'm a control freak
Jim_Casey he he he
ed since i have my rips, programming is better
firstclassdj2 Wellll....
firstclassdj2 Matt and I are very used to working togethter
ed i can search and find buried treasure in my rpms
firstclassdj2 and we compliment each other very well
Jim_Casey I would hope so
Jim_Casey lol
firstclassdj2 ) hehe
Jim_Casey WHen do you two get hitched?
Jim_Casey lol
Randy Same with Linda and I
firstclassdj2 We're buying a house first..
firstclassdj2 so not for a bit )
Randy She surces and I put in
djxtreme Login
djxtreme Hey there.
Jim_Casey Hey xtreme
firstclassdj2 Hi Brody.
djxtreme I love doing homework. Any of you guys know espanol? hehe
Jim_Casey Non
Jim_Casey (oops French there)
firstclassdj2 Very very little )
djxtreme hehe. What are we talking about?
firstclassdj2 Weddings.
Jim_Casey What we do during cocktail hour
Randy The first hour before B&G arive
djxtreme My specialty rolling eyes. Is this Sherry?
firstclassdj2 yep )
Randy What do you do djxtreme
djxtreme During cocktail hour I sit/sat on my butt, refused to eat food offered to me (i always do, in a polite way; the client is paying for our ENTERTAINMENT, however i don't think there is anything wrong with eating food offered)
djxtreme and change the cd's from "cocktail music" to sinatra and back, hehe
djxtreme oh yeah, and titanic.
Randy Titanic?
Randy do you mingle or stay out of the way
djxtreme The soundtrack-there is some fair dinner music onthere
firstclassdj2 The Titanic soundtrack I assume
firstclassdj2 oops beat me to it..
ed i like 'heart of the ocean - djmystic'
djxtreme Stay out of the way, however on the boards i've seen some great ideas on dinner interactions.
Jim_Casey That would be another time frame
Jim_Casey SHall we segue to that?
djxtreme I do an annual dinner/dance, and i've done 2 weddings...that is pretty much the only jobs i have that have a "cocktail" hour necessary
djxtreme oh and the corporate gig i did this winter- i picked up a 10 or dollar cd 3-pack from marshalls that actually had a "cocktail "cd, a "dinner" cd, and a "dessert" cd, all christams music, how cool is that!?
Jim_Casey Thats Ok Brody, thats why we're here in chat and the boards
firstclassdj2 Some of the weddings we have coming up are in golf clubs etc and they are having a music free cocktail in another area of the property
firstclassdj2 I like the 'non-traditional' weddings.
Randy Like the party from the start ones?
Jim_Casey Define non-traditional...
firstclassdj2 We've done art museums etc .. Those are always cool because they dont adhere to the same old sterotypical stuff..
djxtreme Scott Faver has great dinner/cocktail interactions.
firstclassdj2 Meaning they dont walk down the aisle to the bridal march .. and they dont do the same old tired songs that everyone uses..
firstclassdj2 They have a bit of their own style
firstclassdj2 instead constantly following tradition
firstclassdj2 i think thats a nice change sometimes.
Randy non-traditional for us would be like a pig rost, or pool party
Jim_Casey I think a lot more brides and grooms who are better educated want it to be different and non-traditional
firstclassdj2 right.. those are the ones we usually cater to )
Jim_Casey Johnny are you finding mostly traditional weddings int he tri state area?
djxtreme Some examples are...
Johnny_Dee Here in Greenwich, CT we do quite a few outdoor weddings on Estates. On those we could leave the mic at home
Jim_Casey Estates as in mansions?
Johnny_Dee yes
Jim_Casey The geographic differenced for us all are amazing
ed mansion are too challenging
ed too many rooms to get lost
firstclassdj2 Those locations always have much more character than a hotel banquet room
Jim_Casey Yeah, but a real pain to set up in, usually extra fess apply for stairs
ed yuppers
firstclassdj2 DO you have more traditional wedding Jim?
Johnny_Dee we play mostly Motown and white peoples Reggae
firstclassdj2 White peoples reggae .. thats an interesting one.
djxtreme white reggae....hm...
Johnny_Dee Bob Marley etc.
ed ub40
Jim_Casey I think so...
firstclassdj2 I can see that.
Jim_Casey I play a lot more of the upscale places but many are traditional in format
Randy We are doing the Fhira Manson here in Bangor next Mo. All small rooms, very rpmantic
firstclassdj2 I think my favorite so far has been the DeCordova Museum in Waltham
djxtreme Oh, just a quick update i customized the inside of my trailer with the d-rings and everything, so now all my stuff is stored/moved in there, very nice on the inside. i also used my new powered sub on saturday and it made my system 10 times louder and i
djxtreme loved it (the macke )
Jim_Casey Good for you Brody!
somerfeld Login
Jm_Casey Hey Alex!
somerfeld howdy
somerfeld sorry im late
somerfeld missed the last chat too
Jim_Casey No biggie
Jim_Casey Thats why we have the archives
somerfeld ohhh
somerfeld look at that
somerfeld )
djxtreme sorry, we're done. we were just leaving
djxtreme lol!
Jim_Casey Let's talk about the dinner hour
firstclassdj2 Ok lets
somerfeld whats the subject tonight?
Jim_Casey Most of you see buffett style...sit down?
Jim_Casey Wedidngs, format, suggestions, ets
djxtreme Hm...well, i didn't really have a distinction between dinner and cocktail hours at my 2 weddings...
firstclassdj2 more buffet as of late i think
Johnny_Dee mostly sit down
Randy Buffett
ed dinner - i play bmp's dinner cd
ed w/ other stuff mixed in between
firstclassdj2 the head table usually gets served and the rest of the tables do buffet...
djxtreme Just put that on and sit there?
djxtreme Do you do any announcements, take requests, interactions?
somerfeld I see about 75% buffett im guessing maybe 50 50?
djxtreme or is that a big no-no, only during cocktails?
Jim_Casey When planning with your Brides & Grooms, do you ever make suggestions for time of dinners...example sit down avg about 2 hours vs. buffett avg. 1 hour
firstclassdj2 Usually Brides ask my opinion for the flow of the day.
djxtreme And do you respond, or try not to give them any ideas?
Johnny_Dee I would have no control over that...the catering house controls that
djxtreme until they're despeartate
Randy true but what to do before ther arive
firstclassdj2 I give them my advice
Jim_Casey Same here...I go from experiences I have had with certain catering outfits for timing of dinners either sit down of buffett...some are obviously faster than others
firstclassdj2 No one wants to feel rushed.. So I make sure they realize how much time, each thing will take.
Jim_Casey I let the b & g know what I think the amount of time is necessary to complete dinner
ed we end up inviting tables up - i'm not one to call out table nimbers
firstclassdj2 Thats why we have a planner (in addition to our wokrsheet) that outlines the times for everything
Jim_Casey Do you just call the numbers or make it a game?
ed just invite tables
ed personally visit each table
djxtreme And what do you say?
djxtreme On the mic?
ed not sure, wife does that part
ed in a polite way, i just advise folks that their tables will be invited, not called out
djxtreme That's a nicer way of putting it.
firstclassdj2 I guess it depends on the catere
firstclassdj2 r
Jim_Casey I will sometime get interactive at this point to get people ready for dancing after dinner
firstclassdj2 Some do the inviting to the buffet, and other expect the DJ to do it
ed we gladly do it
Randy some dismiss tables some don't
Jim_Casey Maybe have a "competition" using facts from the B&G to see what table will eat first
firstclassdj2 Doesnt really matter either way.
ed we're team players - never refusing to offer assistance
djxtreme what's an example Jim, besides the facts?
firstclassdj2 I dont make people play a game to eat.. Usually they have had a long day and just want to get some FOOD )
ed word...
ed but i do try and the the 1st dances doen and over with
everryone is still spit polised and
ed shining
Jim_Casey people have their first taste of fun with you without being tacky
Jim_Casey and you relate to them with the questions about the Bride and Groom
djxtreme You ask these kind of questions (for the fact-game) in the pre-event meetings?
firstclassdj2 We can break the ice and add a little levity without making them compete to eat
Jim_Casey Yes
Johnny_Dee I always have all the guests give a round of applause to the last table we invite up.Always goes over big
Jim_Casey LOL I like that Johnny
ed note to self - )
Randy me to
Jim_Casey You can play games and still be elegant, it's finding that balance that is the hard part
djxtreme okay, what about the transition to dancing? who gives you the cue when to make the announcements? who handles dimming the lights? what's your announcement? first song?
firstclassdj2 Any of you have Valentines Day Weddings This year?
ed generation dance
somerfeld anyone going to the band convention?
djxtreme is that trip relaly worth it?
somerfeld in ct
firstclassdj2 Jim if you wanna hook up let us know!
somerfeld band /dj rather
Johnny_Dee yes...we are
somerfeld jim are you goning?
Jim_Casey yes Somerfeld we are a vendor there the first for DJ Source Online and we are sharing a booth with Sure Glow
Jim_Casey I can't wait
Jim_Casey at least it will be 40 degrees by then )
djxtreme is the "everything a dj could want is only a click away" actually, legally trademarked?
Jim_Casey Yes
djxtreme is that a big deal to TM something?
ssomerfeld jim only 40, good one
Jim_Casey Yes it is xtreme...it its your Identity
djxtreme why did you do it for this site? just for ...well, i dont know
somerfeld i gues i better sign up huh?
Jim_Casey Yes Alex you better...
Jim_Casey lol
somerfeld i will see you there
Jim_Casey Alright back to the transition to open dancing
firstclassdj2 alrighty
Jim_Casey This is where many of us will differ...
firstclassdj2 we get progressively more uptempo..
Jim_Casey I would like to start with Soop
Jim_Casey Soop's been quiet tonight
Johnny_Dee I work with the caterer as to when things start to happen
Jim_Casey When do you generally cut the cake?
Randy I dim the lights and Linda kicks in the tunes.
Randy Cake after dances
Johnny_Dee after dinner
firstclassdj2 Depends
Randy sometimes before
Jim_Casey Alex?
firstclassdj2 I think most often after dinner
somerfeld depends on the crowd / mood / and client.. or even the cake if its ready or not to be cut
somerfeld usally we cut the cake when dinner has been served
somerfeld generally a pause between food and desert
ed cake cutting signals its time to leave
Jim_Casey I try in my pre-plan consultation to have this done minutes BEFORE the end of dinner
somerfeld this is where we insert the cake for the most part
Jim_Casey This way...B&G have already finished eating
Randy we let them cut it HA HA
Jim_Casey There is time for them to clean up, for the catering staff to send it out to everyone...
ed nite yall - csi miami time
somerfeld after the cake
Jim_Casey then guests are finishing cake during the dances
somerfeld we start the interactive line dancing
somerfeld from there on music and general party songs
Johnny_Dee Nite
Jim_Casey line dancing during dinner?
somerfeld after the cake
Jim_Casey what about your formal dances?
somerfeld rather desert
somerfeld usally done before and after depending on when the client would like it done
Johnny_Dee Father / Bride...Mother / Groom after cake cutting
djxtreme i announced "ladies and gentleman the dancing will now begin so i need everyone and your full bellies out on the dance floor right now for our first song ___"
Jim_Casey when do you do first dance johnny?
djxtreme or something like that
Johnny_Dee right after the B&G are introduced into the room
somerfeld i have to go
Jim_Casey that seems to happen only about 20-30% of the time for me here...
Jerry Login
Jim_Casey Ok Alex...

Jerry mutli here, two dj's for the last 10 years same guys.
Jim_Casey Some needed to watch CSI Miami apparently...lol
Jerry anyone going to Vegas for Mobile Beat?
Jim_Casey I wish I could it is just too costly this year for me
artdj Nope. Not this year.
artdj I'm looking for something in the South
Jim_Casey We will bein Connecticut for the America's Band/DJ show
Jerry Went digital last April Love it
artdj I know. Depends on job. May see you there.
artdj Is the chat over and we are just commizerating?
Jim_Casey We are still chatting
Jerry I guess so
artdj Oops
Jerry anyone else digital
Jim_Casey Been talking about format of wedding receptions
Jim_Casey Not here Jerry...
artdj My wife is calling...but maybe I can stall her for a short minute. No....not what you think.
Jerry We did 280 receptions last year.
Jim_Casey We talked about the different approahces to the cocktail hour and dinner
Jerry great year
Jim_Casey 2 - 8 - 0
Jim_Casey WOW for only 3 of you?
artdj How many double bookings?
Jerry yea, lots of Jewish receptions and many double booking on Sat.
artdj For sure.
artdj Jerry, where are you from state city wise
Jim_Casey Wow...I had 34 last year between late April and early November
Jerry Dallas, Tx
artdj Cool
Jim_Casey No receptions in the winter in Maine for the most part
artdj Got that right Jim!
Jim_Casey I have one this weekend in Massachusetts, but thats it until May th
Jerry We have no slow time, year round for us. Last year in Dallas/Fort Worth, 65,0 licenses were issured
artdj Trust me. You don't want to be towing a dj trailer up here in the winter
artdj Licences. How much? One per event?
artdj Or are you speaking of companies?
Jerry Marrige Licenses issured by the City
Jim_Casey marriage licenses
artdj dah
Jim_Casey lol
Jerry Fort Worth is only 25 miles from Dallas, called the metro plex here
artdj Do you get many requests for cotton-eye joe?
artdj or should i ask
artdj Jerry, i grew up in El Paso
Jerry Using DJ Power and Mackie Powered Speakers makes setup and teardown a snap. I have not used lights in over 1 receptions
artdj Went to UTEP for a semester before going into the service
artdj What Mackie, 30's
Jerry What a weather shock from El Paso
Jerry toooooo heavy, 450's
artdj Yeah, that's what I get for marrying a Mainer
artdj I have RCF 4 subs and 2's
Jerry nice color in the fall. LOL
artdj if you like white
artdj snow i mean
Jim_Casey No subs here
Jim_Casey lol
artdj lol
Jerry no subs here except school dances and corporate
artdj I use the 30's for school dances and when i need presence
artdj Before Mackie bought out RCF technocology, I purchased the powered speakers. Too bad Mackie had to mess with the tech
artdj Jim...what happend to the van?
Jerry those RCF's are nice speakers
artdj Yes. I can't find any others that have such a sweet sound at low volume ...high, well have to tone them down
Jim_Casey The van needed a new transmission
artdj OMG
Jim_Casey $2400
Jim_Casey Cool...hope to see you here more often Jerry
artdj Jerry, Jim doe s a great job too
Jerry I'll bookmark it
artdj He's up on all the latest commentary regarding the dj industry, too
Jim_Casey Board is slow at times, but I like quality over quantity anyway
Jerry lets see, how many gigs do we have to do to pay for the new transmission. LOL
Jim_Casey I need three
Jim_Casey YIKES!
Jim_Casey or 15 bar gigs
artdj I don't need a transmission, but I need some more jobs
Jerry what do you all charge for 4 hours Sat. nights
Jim_Casey No luck from the bridal show Art?
artdj Not sure I got anything either
artdj Except for the bride who came to visit me there. I did book her.
Jerry $750 here, with no lights
Jim_Casey I was $749 and 799 for 5 hours last year
Jim_Casey Now $899...any day or night
Jim_Casey no frills
Jerry with lights?
artdj OK $550 4 hours....depressed area of Maine
Jim_Casey Lights 4 times in 5 1/2 years
artdj I do proms, reunions, school dances, frat partys too
artdj so I do use lights quite often
Jerry same here, I talk them out of it. I own 4 Martin MX 4's and 4 acrobat's but use them for schools and corporate
Jim_Casey Schools are rare for me...Corporates I get 2-3 a year
artdj I'm not that techy.
artdj That reminds me Jim, I need to join the Bangor chamber
Jim_Casey Need to learn Bar/Bat Mitvahs next
Jim_Casey Ok...
artdj I've done two
Jerry we did 60 corporate gigs in Dec in 02 72 in 01
artdj and I've done two jewish weddings
artdj One in syn and other on Sunday
Jim_Casey Its tough to do doubles up here Jerry...
artdj Can't say that I am an expert. I've got some good music for you, reference wise for jewish weddings
Jim_Casey Everything is so spread out
artdj Jim, I'm surprise there are not as may halls in the Portland area.
Jerry I'll never do Bar/Bat Mitvahs, I want to slap them all. Its all I can do not to kick e hell out of the middle school kids when they keep asking what are you going to play next
Jim_Casey 21 population of the ENTIRE state of Maine 1,286,670
artdj Have to agree with you jerry
Jim_Casey Thats less than the Metroplex isn't it?
artdj Speaking of that very same saga, I've got a valentine party Fri night. Can't wait...ugh!
Jerry yes
Jim_Casey Fun fun fun Art!
artdj Not worth the effort to load and unload for 2 hrs.
artdj Lights too
Jerry I have done three Daddy/Daughter dances in the last 10 days, Love them, fun
artdj and they dont pay for crap
artdj congrats, jerry
Jerry It gets me into the different cities to do other dances and fund raisers
Jim_Casey Its hard toi convince Mainers of the value if a DJ
artdj I'm trying to get my foot in the door here, but they have the former school jock/DJ who has been doing it since he graduated 20 years ago
artdj Hard to buck tradition
Jerry does he have radio edited music, maybe a way in
artdj I have all clean music, too
artdj Everybody knows him...he's the king around town...been dj'ing for 20 years +
Jerry no I meant the other dj
Jim_Casey Who is it up there Art?
artdj I'm sure he does.
artdj Dana Wilson
Jim_Casey Yup...I've heard of him...
artdj He is good. I admire him. He and I play a very similar style.
artdj course...i'm not spring chicken...right jim?
Jerry what does he get for a school gig. I can get 1,2-1,5 for a prom here. 350-550 for Fri school 2 hours sometimes 3
Jim_Casey he he he
artdj Jerry, we/re going to be cold, cold the next few days ...high only 5 to 10 degrees. Can't get much over $5 for proms in this area.
Jim_Casey for a prom...
Jim_Casey We are lucky if a school will pay $5-6 here
artdj I'm not sure he said 1200?
artdj Hey Jim...lets move to texas
Jerry 5 for a prom , whoa $1,200 to 1,500
Jerry sure we could use more DJ's LOL
artdj Of course we don't have graduating classes over 3 or 4 students
Jim_Casey Yeah...schools are extreme;y cheap up here
Jim_Casey Good point Art
Jim_Casey my class was 0 in the 6th largest school in m,aine
artdj I graduated in EL Paso, TX at 4+ way back then
Jerry April 26, $1,500 for 900 kids and add on 400 for video
Jim_Casey THAT is why you can get more for that in Texas
artdj What kind of a take on video sales after the prom?
Jerry first season, got three booked out of the ten we have. But have no literature yet. Working on that
artdj Plus, we have to travel miles and miles throughout the state of Maine.
Jim_Casey That's for sure Art
artdj In EL Paso, we had 9 or 10 high schools.
Jim_Casey Usualy 1 per town or city here
Jim_Casey of even 1 for 5 or six towns combined
artdj Of course EL Paso is a big city.
Jim_Casey Portland population 61,0 Maine's largest city
artdj Hey fellows, I got to go. 5 AM comes early. Nice meeting you Jerry. Good to talk to you Jim. Check you later
artdj Logout_
Jerry wife just brought pizza home, gotta run, catch ya later
Jim_Casey ok take care Jerry!
Jerry Logout_
