<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE</div><div class='quotemain'>Email from Kevin Colangelo
A lot of talk recently has focused on 'another' so called National DJ Service run by a English guy - not related to me:
Please do not confuse them with us as one DJ did..LOL.
He sent an email to a client naming us as the contact and it was not our client.
As far as working for other Agents and whatever you all do - I have no problem with this at all BUT remember we as a Company NEVER take the full amount from the client BEFORE an event UNLESS the client insists on paying before - then we immediately send half to the DJ before the event and the other half to arrive at the DJ's address on the day of the event - the other National DJ Service takes the full amount from all its clients before every event - I fell this is VERY dangerous as could lead to no funds to pay a DJ - once you take in money and get it mixed with Company account money then you lose track of what money is who's and legally you should not keep that money as it is not yours to spend - it should be sent to the DJ immediately - apparently you receive payment NOT on the day of the event but 2-3 days after the event - my view - I would NEVER accept a job from this particular Company based on first hand knowledge but do know of 1 DJ who did a job and got paid ok.

It is unprofessional for me to name the Company but many of you know who I mean and to be honest its not a 'real' Company anyway - just one guy and his girlfriend working from home basement - no office etc:
Also remember when you send me a email - I will respond honestly and in my personality - I speak my mind rather like Simon from American Idol - I am renowned for speaking out and not caring what people think - its the English way I am afraid - I know many of you understand:

You ALL have done great work so far - and many references are posted for the events you have done here
http://www.kevincolangelo.com/references.html
Also if anyone using any browsers has any problems viewing our pages or you see a page that does not look right please let me know- what browser you are using and what page:
kevincolangelo@aol.com

Also if your picture is NOT on the State page where you are - email a photo of yourself to me and lets get it up there as DJs with pictures are more likely to get offers:

Crystal James direct email is customerservices@kevincolangelo.com
OR crystaljames@kevincolangelo.com

Crystals DIRECT TELEPHONE NUMBER 24 hours is 315 952 2944 - call between 10am and 2am only
ONLY URGENT MATTERS - respond to gig offers first by email only see note above**
My direct EMERGENCY ONLY Cell phone is 315 952 4653
All other urgent matters to 315 445 9800 or toll free 1 888 291 6362
Fax Line: TOLL FREE (866) 691-5072

And finally when responding and accepting an event you MUST - I repeat - MUST call the client and email the client immediately after faxing your acceptance contract to our office - 2 DJs have LOST the gig due to not doing this - if there is no answer leave a message BUT always say your name ...from Kevin Colangelo Premiere DJ's otherwise they may assume you are just another DJ responding to their inquiry's and delete you message - same with the email - use a signature with Kevin Colangelo Premiere DJs and they will not get confused:

Question - Poll - what is the furthest away in years or months you have a booking for - can you beat me - I have a Bat Mitzvah booked - paid deposit for August 2009 in NJ:

DJ membership gives priority to DJ Members on all events and if you have not considered DJ Membership the advantages are here - you can save a lot of money and get the events FIRST PRIORITY in your State/Area

These type of services have given the industry a black eye. I know of a so called "national" service, that has farmed out the gigs (weddings) a day or two before the gig, to the lowest bidder. I told them I need $700. CASH on my desk two weeks prior to the wedding. They moved on to the el' cheapoos who would sell their own mother for a wedding gig.

Ladies and Gentlemen, may I have your attention....

This guy emailed me "out of the blue" on November 24th regarding needing a DJ for a wedding in North Carolina on December 10th. There was very little information: Date, time, venue location. Something about all of his DJ's were busy or not interested and I should email him back if I was interested. They could pay travel costs, too.

Since I had that date available because of my recent relocation to NC, I replied.

Here is his reply, which was not by him, but by Customer Service (the lady referenced in Jim Casey's initiating post):

<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE</div><div class='quotemain'><span style="color:blue">We will pay you the full amount of $575.* Would you like a contract with the client's details?* Let me know.* Thanks.</span>
By the way, I am 2-1/2 hours away from this venue. The reception is 4-hours starting at 6:00 pm. For what it's worth, my starting rate for 4-hour reception is $625. I had to think long and hard about this one. Ordinarily, I would have added another $150 for the travel and $75 for the lodging. Keep in mind, too, that I have not even made contact with the bride because her name and contact particulars have yet to be provided.

At this point, something in the back of my head told me to check the DJSOL archives for anything on this guy. I did. Yep! He is known for short fuse notification and cheap fees.

Still, I needed the gig! What the heck! I agreed. Figured it would be a start in NC and maybe get a few referrals from the venue and the bride.

I was emailed a very vague contract for me to sign that would be between KCPDJ. I fired back an email asking for clarification of certain paragraphs but did not get a reply back. However, I got a telephone call from Customer Service who felt it would be easier to answer my questions over the phone than email. To keep this story short, I signed the contract and faxd it back.

The contract was only between KCPDJ and me. The client would pay me the $575 in cash at the venue. Now is where the good, bad and ugly part comes in to view.

I did a very informative email to the Bride requesting that she reply quickly because it was already Nov. 27th and wedding was on Dec. 10th. Within hours I received an email from the Bride who was ANGRY, but obviously not at me. Here is her reply to me"

<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE</div><div class='quotemain'>Dear Sir, I'm sorry you had to be involved it this situation.* We were not satisfied with Mr. Colangelo's business ethics or his timing. After numerous attempts to contact Mr. Colangelo and after contract had already been signed, we were finally notified two weeks before our wedding that they did not have a DJ for us.* So I'm sure you will understand my anxiety, so we went ahead and found another DJ.* I'm sorry for any inconvenience.* Thank you for your time.
OK! What do I do now! Am I still obligated via my contract with "Mr. C"? So I fired off an email to KC and CJ telling them to void the contract between us as evidenced by the attached email!

What kind of a mess did I get myself into? This can't be happening. I am extremely professional and ethical and now my name and DJ service has been dragged through the mud. What would you have done?

I immdiately replied to the Bride's email, see reply below:

<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE</div><div class='quotemain'><span style="color:green">Thank you for the thoughtful and timely reply. Just for your information, your "cancellation" note arrived by email before Crystal James' email. I appreciate your courteous approach to the unfortunate fiasco.

Nevertheless, I would hope you were appreciative of the email I sent explaining who I am and so forth. Although we were unable to work together, I trust that you would have been satisfied with my approach to working with prospective clients. Should you have a need or perhaps a friend of yours may have a need for a "professional" DJ that you will feel comfortable in recommending Twin Spin DJ Service/Art Dearing</span>.
In addition, I asked her to call me or I would call her if she wanted to "vent" with regard to the particulars of this unfortunate situation. She didn't call, but sent me another email. I have added below a few of her comments:

<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE</div><div class='quotemain'>I regret that we weren't able to work with you, i would've probably been more satisfied with the outcome, as of now, I've heard more from you then I ever did from Mr. Colangelo's company.
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE</div><div class='quotemain'>I sincerely regret that we were not able to work with you, and I will definitely keep you in mind if we or anyone we know have an event that a DJ is needed.* I apologize for venting to you, but I'm sure you'll appreciate to know that with just your timely responses alone it has let me know that not all DJ company's could be like Mr. Colangelo's.
Not to impune Mr. Colangelo's integrity, this is rather one-sided, but some of it must be the truth.

Maybe, just maybe...this bride will not cast all DJs in the same light as she has seen Mr. Colangelo. Let's hope that the DJ she found on her own will do an exceptional job! :shrug

As for my future involvement with Mr. Colangelo, I will have to wait and see what comes my way...but the fee will have to be worth my time and travel as well as adequate lead time. :oooops :oooops

Question: Would you have asked the bride to sign a contract with your DJ service for liability and insurance purposes? Do you suspect the contract you signed with the entertainment agency would be sufficient to cover your liability interest?

Are all event agents on the up-and-up?

Quite frankly I never use an agent.

Also I prefer to do all my own bookings direct with my clients so there is no middle men to mess things up.

About once a year I get booked by an old venue I used to be resident at, the venue is ok though most of the time contacting the client for this function directly never produces good results, for example this coming Saturday is my "Annual" booking by this venue, this time I did get some details but not many.

Bride & grooms first names.
First Dance Track
Last Dance Track
Start Time
Buffet Time

That is all. The rest of the info I got off the venue which amounted to:

small room
30 guests

Oh, How I love 3rd party bookings...

Gentlemen,

Just an old dog's humble opinion here.

I have heard countless horror stories concerning third-party agreements from clients and "lonewolf" DJs alike.

Don't fall for it. It really is that simple. You'll get shafted if you do.

Run your business like a business. Deal with your clientele yourself in a professional manner. You sign contracts with your clients and manage your booking calendar. You deal with clients and venues directly. Never, ever conduct business through a third party.

We've received contacts from these guys in the past. My response is always the same: "Give me the client's contact info and we'll take care of it." Of course, they won't do that. They want to make gravy and pay us peanuts.

We don't go for that crap and we told 'em so. They don't call us anymore. They've removed Night Wolf Entertainment from their sucker lists.

If you own your business equipment and music you do not need to let third parties control your business dealings. If you fall for that nonsense, shame on you.

Just some thoughts.

Tom:

I would have done likewise (fee + travel), but since I never used a third party in booking a function I though it might be interesting. More than likely I would not have gotten a reply either. LOL

My intervention with the Bride was to make sure that she knew not all DJs are in the same league as Mr. Colangelo.

Now...does anybody know of a booking agency that goes by the name of All Music Xpress? Got an email today from them. They were looking for a DJ that also did Karoake. Contacted me "out of the blue". When I said that I didn't do Karoake they wanted me to send them my particulars so they could add me to their database. Not! They don't pay the DJ until AFTER the event by mail. Sorry, I need the money 2 weeks prior or the day of before I begin setting up my equipment! The gig was for December 16th, week from this Friday. Short notice again!

Art moved to North Carolina ???

Wow...I have to get back on here a little more often!

About 18 months ago, when I was working for N.A.M.E., I was alerted that Mr. Colangelo used my pictures on his website. He and I had a discussion at that time, as did my attorney and I. He was very quick to remove the pictures, and I told him at that time that he really needed to be careful.

I too received the above e-mail....why ? I am not too sure, but it got the "browse and delete" from me.

It is a matter of personal choice. Like any arrangement between two parties things can go well or not. Jam, yours went well.

I've decided to give Kevin's membership idea a try to see how it goes. Like Jam, it could fill some empty dates.

I'll report the good and bad.
