My next gig isn't until September

After last night's wedding, I am off the rest of the weekend and taking the family to the Marshfield Fair to spend money stupidly on dumb rides, bad food and arcade games I can't ever win.

My next gig is next Saturday, September 3.

Where the heck did the summer go and why is the time between June and September always the quickest 3 months of the year?

We missed the Delaware State fair this year due to our work commitments. Shirl and I love the fair and the concerts. If you're like me, the old Ferris wheel is likely to be one of the few carny rides you can enjoy anymore. I'd love to ride those bone-rattlers like I did years ago but my stomach seems to have aged before my mind did.

You may not be able to win those huge stuffed animals like the younger pups do but you can still have fun trying. And you know... carny food may not be the best but it wouldn't be a fair without those vinegar-soaked fries, greasy burgers and drippy hot dogs. What the hell -- we only live once. We're off 'til the end of October when we have a Halloween dance in Virginia. Then it's the fall weddings.

John: Ah, yes, that long awaited mid-September respite. Even though September here is a very busy month (13 engagements), my wife and I skitter off to Cape May, NJ, for four days.

Rates are way down, most kids are back in school, the water is still warm, and the beaches are sparsely populated. Pitch a small lean-to, sip good red wine all day, fly several of my 8 kites, and just relax.

Time does fly, especially if it's neglected or taken for granted. Enjoy the burgers and dogs, you lucky devil.
