i think without the "bottom feeders" we have nothing to be compared to. they make us look that much better. whether it's a car or dinner, you normally get what you pay for. AGAIN... most brides say if they had to do over they would have spent more money on entertainment

Agreed. We've had several clients say "I wish you'd been at our wedding".

I ask why.

"Because you're professional." they reply.

Bottom-feeding isn't necessarily about cost. Cost is a large factor... but there are some very talented entertainers out there who work in low income markets. Likewise, there are dodgy characters in every market.

Set your company apart from the rest. Run a professional business. Provide what you promise and then some. Go the extra mile. Treat every client as though he or she is the most important client you have. Be flexible. Be prepared for changes and roll with 'em. Take the initiative. Smile at all times and treat people as you would wish to be treated in return.

Entertainment and a love for music come from the heart. When the DJ is having fun people can see it. They're watching. Believe me, they see it.

When you do these things... when your heart is in your shows the bottom-dwellers won't matter anymore.

Let's think a little more basic on this.

What is a Bottom Feeder?

Well it's a Fish.

Why is it a Bottom Feeder, because it picks up the scraps dropped by others and does nothing itself to actively obtain it's own food. Some bottom Feeders will chase down weaker fish and steal food from their mouths.

So all you need to do is find a DJ who runs his business like the above Fish does and you have an equivilant bottom feeder.

Maybe a DJ who begs for work rather than advertises. A DJ who actively attempts to steal work or contracts from other DJs.

Also DJs who work for almost FREE and say "they do it because they love the job and don't need the money". All this does is take money from the DJs who do need it to live.

My personal definition is basically a DJ who has no scruples and runs their business in an un-ethical fashion.

A bit off-topic but I thought I'd share:

I had a client meeting Saturday afternoon with a B&G. These folks are not prima donnas -- they're around my age and have seen DJ companies at work. This is why they wanted to meet with me before making a decision.

We've all heard horror stories... it goes with the territory, I guess. This couple's primary concerns were a decent music library and an outgoing personality. Seems that the DJs these folks have seen didn't have much in the way of some of the dance floor standards and just stood behind the console.

Before I left, the groom asked if we had Cotton-Eyed Joe by Rednex. I smiled and replied "Sure... we've been playing that song for years. People love it."

Evidently they were at a friend's wedding recently. The DJ didn't have the song.

I wonder sometimes...
