Jam - I agree with that point, and I've never had this come up where there are professional caterers.

I can't say if A DJ should be see doing these things but I can tell you that THIS DJ is not seen doing items 1, 2, and 3. My wife works most shows with me so you know I won't be seen doing item 4.

I try to do #4 but usually get nowhere....................
I never eat and don't drink or smoke.

I have seen dudes slober their meals behind the console and it repulses me.
At least go sit in a quiet corner somewhere if you have to.

I frequently have visitors during dinner and really feel odd having to talk with a mouthfull or with food in my teeth.

Not to mention sticky fingers on the equipment is a no no....

At most weddings, I will ask if the catering staff would like me to call tables. I do this for two reasons.

1. This helps me break the ice with the guests. I am able to do some light, fun interaction with them as I send the tables to the buffet (about 75% of my weddings use buffets)

2. The impression this can leave on a client and other potential clients is great. Doing what is perceived as two jobs at the same time gives you "hustle" points in the client and other vendors minds.

Around here, calling tables up to the buffet is already considered the responsibility of the DJ. But you're right, adding a "game" approach to the order of table-calling might be fun. Unfortunately, at most buffets, the guests ignore my request to wait for their table to be called and come up whenever the hell they want. Rudeness rules in NYC.

Donny...

This is where you use the microphone to your advantage and take cdontrol. If you let them be aware from the start you are in charge, people will listen.

I know weddings are smaller here in Maine, but I just did a wedding for 175 people two weeks ago that the line went extremely smooth.

I explain that I release tables when the line is very small.

My method is to allow one table at a time to go. When there are only 3 remaining in line, the next table gets released. It is very orderly and helps speed up the buffet

i have addressed this topic on other boards and to me it's a no brainer...

if offered food by the B&G or the parents, I will accept. otherwise i see myself as a paid vendor and i will act accordingly.

as far as drinking... i always get with the bartender to see what the bar situation is. if the B&G are paying per drink then i will not drink off their tab. i tip the bartender prior and get a few soda's before the guest arrive. I never drink alcohol at a event. the liabilities are way too steep.

NOW.. If they are friends of the family then of course all bets are off!!! :krazy

behind their system? Is that your right?

(PS. Sorry for the slow down in questions, my mother-in-law, passed away Friday, and I am the Executor, and was the funeral planner for the family, my participation will still be limited for the next few days, but here is a question to get things going again)
1)Eating:

We used to have it in our contract that the all personnel were entitled to one meal but we took that out. If invited, we'll eat. If the only place available is the DJ table, I pass.

2)Drinking:

Not alcohol. I generally take several bottles of the Wawa Leomonaide Ice Tea to an event and drink that. I'm addicted to it, LOL.

3)Smoking:

I don't smoke but one of my partners does. If we are working together he usually goes outside when he can't fight the urge anymore.

4)Flirting:

Most of the time my wife is my MC, so ... Ahem, seriously, I wouldn't even think of flirting. But I do have two single partners. I ask them not to flirt on the clock. After the event is over they can do whatever they want.
