What the heck is "What is your style" supposed to mean? It is a questions many are asking almost as quickly as what's your price & availability. In fact it is often the first question they hit me with.

Has anyone else had this question come up? Where are they getting it from? When I ask most of them what they mean, they dance around the question like they don't really know. How do you handle this one?

Yep. Style. Due to the increasing number of "Interactive DJs'" (whatever that's supposed to mean).

I would suggest that the client is asking is if the DJ is providing and using props such as the Village People hats n' stuff, glow necklaces, Hawaiian leis, and pretty much other games and such. This is a terrible analogy but think of it as an adult Mitzvah or 16th Birthday party?

Or do you do all the Participatory Dances (slides, cotton-eyed, macrena, chicken, hands up, bunny hop, hokey pokey, hustle) as a matter of recurrent routine.

Or do you not say a word and play & mix music.

Or do you babble incessantly all night,

That's what I think they mean by "style".

If they're talking about what kind of music, they generally seem to ask that more directly, like "What kind of music do you play?"

Nothing wrong with any of it mind you, just other approaches at audience entertainment . The client is trying to ascertain upfront and first (after "How Much DO You Charge, of course!) .

I can only assume they mean what type of music do you mostly play. As all around wedding dj's we for the most part carry a little of everything and are suppose to have everything. There are those DJ's who play mostly urban, country, hip hop, etc. They may not have or even know who Frank Sinatra is. I have turned down weddings before because the couple wanted mostly country music. I carry whats popular in country but not enough to play a whole night.

What's your style? Well mine I guess would be a jack of all plays. If I have have most of what everbody want's that works for me. But then again I could be wrong.

I'll side with Cap on this.

Usually "style" is based on a scale from "low-key" to "high-energy".

At the extremes are the DJ who doesn't bring a mic or leave his console, and the DJ who won't shut up on the mic and who dances on his speaker wearing a clown outfit and shooting confetti guns during the Chicken Dance.

I'm usually in the lower mid range of the spectrum.

Cap has hit it pretty much head on.

When a bride ask "what is your style?"

She is asking, "are you cheese or can I expect a little class from you."

It is an open-ended question that has several meanings/answers!

Style involves not only the type of music we have, but how we dress, what our system looks like, if we are energetic and do/don't do dance routines all night, sound like a radio station DJ or are low key, are we the show or is the B&G . . . ?

What's your style? What kind of music do you play? What kinds of CD's do you have?

It seems we all have the answer collectively. The problem is relaying that answer to the client in a way they can understand. I'm not a salesman and that at times hurts me. But, I like to ask my clients "What are you looking for in entertainment for you function"? This way I can adjust my answer to fit their needs. I will not say I can do what I know I can't, the money is just not worth the bad rep. I can play hip hop and rap but I cannot scratch except what is attached to me.

What's your style?

GOOD QUESTION!

more B/G's are asking this question because they are for the most part SICK OF CHEESE....

My answer is: "We don't try to be the center of attention, but instead our focus is to put YOU, the newlyweds, in the spotlight. The B/G are the Stars of The Show......NOT the DJ!"

They love this answer. They also tell me they love the "NO CHEESE" symbol in my advertising....

For years I have described my service as formal but fun. The client can paint the picture they wish of that description.
The client WANTS to think the best....so I let um.
