Basic Software Pre-Purchase Bench Test
I read hear and other locations individuals asking about software programs and after I was asked today for what has to be the hundredth time. “How do I decide what software is worth installing” What is the process I use for bench testing and I’ve decided to share the 1st step I use in my official “Professor Jam Slam Bench Test”…
As many of you, I’ve found myself installing program after program after program over the years onto my system only to discover the stability or features did not live up to my expectations…
I as many used to scratch my head when a program acted strange or did not live up to expectation and found individuals blaming my hardware configuration which left me confused when other programs that were resource hogs did not have issues… This resulted in a multi-tear process that gave me the ability to eradicate programs that had hidden issues and relieve me of the tedious process of elimination... If the program did not pass my step #1 – It never made it to the bench test…
Professor Jam Slam Bench Test #1
Let’s do the first step in the Professor Jam Slam Bench Test and put Propellerhead’s “Reason 2.5” located here
http://www.propellerheads.se/ to the test… (If this doesn’t pass the test you have other issues) Download the demo and install it onto your system…
To prep the Bench Test you must open all these programs then minimize each of them
#1.. Open the program Word
#2.. Open the program Excel
#3.. Open your internet Explorer program
#4.. Open your email program
#5.. Open your media player
Then open Propellerhead’s “Reason 2.5” you downloaded and click the play button at the bottom center… (if you hear no audio and see the meters bouncing you will need to select a sound card in preferences)
* Now click on Windows "Start" in the lower left corner, and move the mouse over "A;; programs" and do not click there, just wait until Windows program menu comes up.
Click one time to retrigger this procedure so the menu hides, and then pops up again. When it’s doing this your audio should never skip, or crackle.
You do this first with the Reason program, and you will hear that it never ever skips, if it does however skips or stops, you might have issues with you graphic drivers.
Apps I tested with this and never had any problems with include Winamp, Wavelab , Media Player, Acid and of course Reason.
To conclude:
If you are testing a program, and Media Player, Wavelab, Reason or Winamp plays fine, on your system but not the program you are testing, there is nothing wrong with you computer, it the app that has issues.
This is a very basic test and it must be passed or you will have problem performing, guaranteed.
I hope this works for many of you… Peace….
