The RIAA is making its move against illegally distributed mix tapes and Cds done by mainly Club Djs.

As well they should. I completely disagree with the article. The record companies have a right to make a profit on music that was recorded and originally distributed by them. If the artists and producers don't want the record companies to make a profit off their music, they shouldn't sign a contract with them. They should just go and produce and distribute their own music through their own independent labels. They make that choice because they know that they NEED the distribution power and marketing efforts of big record companies in order to be successful in the music business.

The record companies probably lose money in most of their ventures by taking risks on artists who are never popular. When they actually do sign an artist who is successful, they should at least expect to make money off that success without allowing illegal copies to cut into their profits.

Typical liberal thinking...

(Descending from the soapbox now.)

Not to say its not happening, but I found it interesting that that article contains no "facts".
No examples, facts, dates, names, places, quotes or anything to back that story up.
Very weak article unfortunately. I dont doubt its likely but I'm wary of 'news' articles that contain no facts.

You're right Ed, the article is terribly written, but I do believe the time is coming. They are slowly spreading their web to include Club Djs.

One of the questions I'd like to ask Dr Drax (for the RIAA):

what about the DJs who mix for other DJs.

If the mixes are being used to promote the CD and the DJ is simply the vessel for this purpose.

It makes sense to keep these CDs out of the hands of "bedroom DJs" (because they are the end users who should be buying CDs)

Probable outcome as I see it:

a registration for performing DJs (ones with a regular gig) who are allowed to swap mix CDs that are used for the DJ only and not to be distributed to non-performing DJs.
