(this is going to get controversial, so FLAME AWAY!)

No flames...but some responses!
I agree with many of these, but "The Stripper" I obviosuly disagree on. Matt, you actually contradict yourself saying that it's tacky to not play the B/G requests, yet you will not play "The Stripper", even if requested. I know your friend had the horrifying experience, but I will play what my client's request. I actually guarantee the Bouquet/Garter Toss along with the other formals.
Also...I use Gemini. Yes...I use Gemini. It is Professional sound whether you believ so or not. Is it on the lower end? I dunno. I have used a Gemini Dual CD Player for 4 years with NO PROBLEMS. Remember my rate in Maine too.
Equipment does NOT make the DJ, service, talent and ability make the DJ.

I resemble that remark
btw....I use a Gemini Mixer as my back-up mixer. BUT my primary mixer is NOT a DJ mixer it is actually a sound board. So I DO use professional equipment.
I think

i agree to all comments with the added exception of if the B&G requests a track as a tradition backing tune or it's in their Must Play List then I will honour their request.
One thing I will Add to that list is this:
11) I Do Not Allow my Equipment to fall into a state of Disrepair , like so many DJs do.

I posted this at the other board, and (with the help of Dan Leithem, Desmond, DJ Salt, and others) we're already up to #33
It seems Dez has the same aversion to "Hey Mickey" (Toni Basil) as I have with the David Rose Orchestra "Stripper" theme!

I agree with Jim on the use of Gemini. I haven't used one in some time, but the first dual CD player I had, a Gemini, outlasted anything I've had since. I would go back to Gemini if they offered product features I look for. I live very close to their NJ headquarters, and they were always VERY helpful when it can to occasional equipment service.
Just curious -- what brands does DJMC consider "professional"?
I'll go one better on #9 ...
9) Charges an exorbitant fee for the service, and sends a $100 an hour DJ to perform at the event.
I'm not a multi owner, but if I were, I would feel I were cheating my own employee if I paid him $100 hr to do a job and charged any more than $150 hr. For a $50 hr pay gig, I could charge no more than $75 hr, which is unheard of, at least here in NYC.

#3, ok, the stripper song IS tacky, but in this case I think tacky works great..
(I give the client the choice every time and they "choose" the tacky..)
#6 ummm. whats wrong with Gemini? would i put it up against pioneer? no.. is it home equipment? no.. yes its cheaper, but the equipment does NOT make the DJ.
#10, I like all types of music and styles. one mans cheeze is anothers favorite band...

Doesn't it get a bit tiring to listen to the ignorant and uninformed spew forth garbage about Equipment.
Give me a full rack of Radio Shack equipment and I'll pull off a perfect wedding!!!
Heck! I started out with a Radio Shack mixer over 24 years ago. Know what? I still have that mixer and use it in my Karaoke rig. How many still have 24 year old gear that they still depend on?
Like they say....it's not your TOOL, it's how you use it! :giggle
