The L1 system can operate with out the subs. The system EQ automatically switches into bi-map mode when no subs are connected. The 24 drivers in the tower now handle the entire freq range BUT for DJ application, the bass sucks without the subs.
DJRon1: It impossible to verbalize the sound propagation properties of this system. Impossible. It defies all current realities and contradicts everything previously taken as scientifically impossible.
The largest group to date was just shy of 400 in a cavernous facility with 60' high granite cylindrically shaped ceilings, a solid marble floor, marble walls with little to no sound dampening due to historical restrictions on any renovation. No echo! No reverberation! No residual thump from the subs! Volume was reduced from my previous system levels by 30%. Filled the room with perfect audio, corner to corner with less than 10-15% drop off YET you can stand directly in front of those towers, put your ear on them (or your mic) and it will not hurt (or feedback).
Look fellas/gals., I'm not trying to sell you on these speakers or even attempting to imply that "mine is better than yours". All that's being stated is that this very pricey system has cured 90% of my 26 years of previous sound system woes. Not covered it up...cured.
From a client sales standpoint for those who sell their gear to clients in terms of numbers and size and watts, most folks don't know or care about Peavey or Mackie or JVC or JBL etc and so on. I say BOSE, nothing else, and the product recognition in terms of quality and precision sound and high cost is instantaneous and requires no further explanation. One word. BOSE. In terms of marketing and closure rates, it has already paid for the system. BOSE is my pal.
